- Approve Learning Outcome and Select Outcome Classification
- Approve All Learning Outcomes
- Align Learning Outcomes to Rating Scales
Approve Learning Outcomes
To review and approve outcomes in Insights, coordinators will select Outcomes from the main menu and scroll to the section entitled Review Learning Outcomes.Outcomes display below. Outcomes in need of approval are flagged as Unapproved (see example below).
Select Outcome Classification
When an Unapproved Outcome is identified, coordinators must define its classification (new, private, variant or version). Click the right chevron icon (>) to expand the outcome details.
In the dropdown named Select Outcome Classification, choose the desired classification (defined below, and also on screen in blue information (i) icon); then choose Approve.
Outcome Classifications are defined as follows:
-
- Variant: This is a variant of a course outcome that already exists.
- Version: This is the new, canonical version of an existing outcome (should replace an existing outcome in the outcome listing).
- New: This is the first instance of this outcome for the course (its first use in Insights).
- Private: This sets the outcome to be viewable only by faculty who teach course offerings containing the outcome. It is not available to curriculum map or assessment plan and is removed from all Coordinator views in Insights. Faculty will see the outcome on their dashboard in the relevant course.
Once an outcome is approved, users will select a rating scale that aligns to the Insights Mastery Levels (so when results are collected, data is summarized using standardized measures that are shared across the entire institution). See instructions below.
Set All as Private Learning Outcomes
Course learning outcomes in Insights can be mass-designated as Private.
Private CLOs are removed from Coordinator views and they are not usable in Curriculum Map or the Assessment Plans. Private CLOs are only viewable to faculty on their course dashboard in Insights, if they are the instructor of the course offering that contains the associated private outcome.
To set a group of CLOs as Private, click the button Set All as Private. This will set all of the unapproved outcomes (that meet the filtered criteria entered above) to Private.
Approve All Learning Outcomes
Course learning outcomes in Insights can be mass-approved.
Enter parameters of the desired course learning outcomes and click Search to display the CLOs below.
TIP: To see only the outcomes that required approval, also select the Status filter 'Unapproved'.
Outcomes requiring approval display below each course. Click Approve All to approve all learning outcomes with one click.
When Approve All is selected, the outcome classification is automatically set to New (see Outcome Classification above).
Once an outcome is approved, users will select a rating scale that aligns to the Insights Mastery Levels (so when results are collected, data is summarized using standardized measures that are shared across the entire institution). See instructions below.
Align Learning Outcome to Rating Scale
Once an outcome is approved, they must be aligned with a rating scale in order to see results based on Insights Mastery Levels (so when results are collected, data is summarized using standardized measures that are shared across the entire institution).
Within an approved learning outcome record, expand the field Canvas Rating Scale Details.
If there was a rating scale aligned to this learning outcome in Canvas it will be visible here.
If there was no rating scale aligned to the outcome, then the Institutional Default Rating Scale (defined in Setup > Mastery Levels and Rating Scales) will be applied and shown.
To change or align a different rating scale to this outcome, click the button to + Add Rating Scale. In the modal window Canvas Outcome Rating Scale, click from the dropdown Select Rating Scale and then click Save.
