A qualitative measure is a a more disaggregated assessment process than that of the numerical collection of scores on outcome rubrics captured via Canvas and Juried Assessment. In addition to course-embedded and juried assessments that include quantitative measures, Coordinators can plan to gather evidence through qualitative assessment measures in Insights.
Capturing qualitative measures with Insights will give your quantitative data additional context for a more holistic understanding of student learning, making your data more meaningful and decisions more impactful.
Add a Qualitative Measure to an Existing Assessment Plan in Insights
From the Assessment Plan screen (Plan > Assessment Plan), click the pencil icon to edit an existing cycle’s assessment plan.
In the modal window Plan Assessments, click the button + Add Assessment.
In the modal window Add Assessment, go to field Type of Measure and select Qualitative Measure. Complete the remaining fields according to the steps listed below.
1. Measure Name: enter a descriptive name for this qualitative assessment.
2. Upload Measure Evidence: select Yes or No; evidence can be uploaded for this qualitative measure.
3. Goal: (optional) select a goal to align this assessment to.
4. Objective: (optional) select an objective to align this assessment to.
When done, click Add Assessment.
The qualitative measure will then appear in the planned assessment for that specific cycle. Click X in the top right corner to close the modal window and return to the Plan Assessments screen.
View Qualitative Measures Against Cycle Results
From the Dashboard in Insights, go to the field named Cycle and click the dropdown to select the cycle where the qualitative measure was planned; and then click Search.
Scroll down to the Assessment Plan section and click the button to View Cycle Results.
Qualitative measures will appear under the Measure Name entered when it was created (e.g., Student Survey).
Enter notes related to the qualitative measure (ex: “Students were surveyed on…” or “We opened a new Writing Center during this cycle”).
If Yes was selected for uploading measure evidence when the assessment was created, the link to Upload Measure Evidence is available (ex: uploading the student survey tool used and a graph of summary survey results). When done, click Save Measure Evidence to retain details here.
