Assessment plans play a vital role in evaluating and improving various aspects of educational programs and initiatives.

Insights allows coordinators to choose from three distinct types of assessment plans and each offer unique approaches to assessing student performance and program effectiveness:

  1. Course-Embedded Assessment: Course-embedded assessment focuses on evaluating student learning within the context of individual courses. In this approach, assessments are integrated directly into the course curriculum and assignments in Canvas. The primary goal is to gauge how well students are meeting specific learning objectives or outcomes. As assignments are graded in Canvas, results are are visible on the Insights dashboard to provide educators insights into the effectiveness of teaching methods and curriculum design, allowing for timely adjustments and improvements to enhance the overall learning experience.

  2. Juried Assessment: Juried assessment involves a comprehensive evaluation of student work by a panel of experts or peers, known as a "jury." This approach is commonly used in programs where evaluation requires expert judgment (i.e. fine arts, performing arts, or creative writing). Students submit their work, which is then reviewed based on established criteria and standards. Juried assessment provides a nuanced understanding of student performance and fosters the development of critical skills, ensuring that students meet industry or discipline-specific standards.

  3. Qualitative Assessment: Qualitative assessment takes a descriptive and narrative approach to understanding educational outcomes. It seeks to capture the subjective qualities of learning experiences. This type of assessment is valuable for exploring aspects that cannot be easily quantified, such as understanding the depth of knowledge gained or the impact of an educational program on student development.
