How do I add a missing Course Code in Inisghts?

This is a ‘one-and-done’ solution, allowing you to add new courses well in advance of actual generation by the SIS into Canvas or, if an offering was in the distant past and not captured by the initial Course Fetch of Canvas into Insights.

Who is this article for?

  • This lets you add new courses ahead of time, even before they're officially created in Canvas.
  • It also helps if a course hasn't been offered in ages and wasn't caught by Insights initially.

A quick review of How Insights  Works  with course codes:

  • Insights pulls in all your Canvas courses (except sandboxes and other stuff you tell it to ignore).
  • You organize these courses into "course groups" for each degree program in Insights. (For more on this, click on "How do I set up my institution's organizational structure within Insights?"
  • Curriculum maps use these "course-group buckets" for all terms, even if a course isn't offered in a specific term. This is critical for creating the mapping for both PLOs and ILOs 
  • If Insights sees a course code just once, you can add it to course groups, manage outcomes, and map it.

What to do when courses are missing:

When you find that a course code is absent from Inisghts and Canvas, this can create a problem with Curriculum Mapping as well as other Insights functionality. 

  1. Create a fake course shell: For courses not in Insights or Canvas, make a shell course in Canvas and use the missing course code as the course code (For Example: ENG 422).
  2. Publish the fake course: You need to trigger an event in Canvas in order for Inisghts to sync the course. To do so you can publish the course. Make sure it is not set to Public in course visibility. 
  3. Wait for the refresh to complete: It will take about 5 minutes to sync with Canvas, and then you can refresh Insights.
  4. Unpublish the fake course: Make it private again.
  5. Add it to groups in Insights: Put that "new" course into the right course groups and degree programs. Guide.

  6. Now you can work with it: You can upload Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs) and map Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)/Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs). For more mapping information, visit the article "How do I Curriculum Map in Insights?"

     

Quick Tip:

If you need to add more courses, just change the course code on that fake shell and republish. Then, repeat the steps.
